We've Been Invaded By The Worst Strain Of The Stomach Flu That Medical Professionals Have Ever Come Across

It's been a terrible five days for me and five days of excruciating pain for my four year old. It started Wednesday night with my little one vomiting all over the place. We had no idea this sickness was lurking in my little ones body. Yes, the stomach flu. By Friday night we ended up in emergency because my little ones vomiting was continuous and her 103 fever persisted. She hadn't eaten in three days and wouldn't drink or let me get the Tylenol into her little body. It's was a sad site to see. I was afraid that she was so dehydrated that her little body would start to go into renal failure. Which is very common if you become dehydrated. Her poor little lips were so cracked and dry that they started to bleed. So, at 9 pm Friday night, there we were on the way to the emergency. It's a 45 minute drive to the closest emergency that has a pediatric unit, which is what she need. She vomited 3 more times on our drive, which seemed like a never ending trip. Once at the hospital she vomited two more times which showed signs of blood. The doctor assured me nothing was wrong. The blood was just from her continued vomiting and a raw throat. The doctor mentioned that our little one might need IV fluids to get her back on her feet. Once we got the urine test results back it showed no dehydration. Yippee! No needles tonight. They gave her some medication to stop the nausea and the vomiting. With in an hour the vomiting had stopped all together. She's still a little bit beat up from being sick, but hasn't vomited since Friday night. She even ate a little Saturday morning. We received a prescription for the anti-nausea medication to keep the vomiting at bay. I'm so relieved that she is feeling better. She still has constant diarrhea and we are up every few hours through the night to clean her. Her poor little behind is so raw. I haven't had a good nights sleep in 5 days and my body is starting to feel run down. Uggg! I'm hoping she will be able to sleep through the night tonight. The hospital told me, among many other medical professionals, that this strain of the stomach flue is rapidly hitting everyone this year. It's the worst strain they have ever come across. So beware everyone it may be lurking in your house. I'm just hoping that the hubby and I aren't the next victims of this nasty virus. I have to mention that my pediatrician was of no help to me in this situation. I called two times and they offered no advice but to let the infection run it's course. They never even offered me any type of anti-nausea medication so my little one could at least keep fluids down. The poor kids suffered for three long days. What's wrong with these people? What if I was a mother who didn't understand the dangers of dehydration? What blows my mind is they never mentioned to make sure and keep her hydrated. Thank god, I have an amazing mother who has been a nurse for over 40 years and walked me through this nightmare. I'm so angry at my daughters pediatrician. So, I've decided to try and find a different doctor. Gosh, when I was a kid we had an amazing pediatrician. I had severe Asthma when I was a kid and was rushed to emergency several times with blue lips and gasping for air. Each time they had to pump me full of adrenaline to get me breathing again. Each and every time I was rushed to emergency, no matter the time or the day, my pediatrician was there right beside my mom. Walking her through the medical nightmare. He was an amazing doctor and loved all his babies. If he hadn't retired several years ago, I would of picked him as my daughters doctor. When I call my pediatricians office during or after business ours I get a nurse to answer my questions and her advice is always to take my kid to the emergency. Most of the time the medical staffs advice really stinks. What ever happened to the days of sincerely caring about your patients? When did the medical profession turn into this money making meat market? It really just pisses me off!! So, say a prayer for my little one and wish me luck on finding a new doctor. I just want to send an apology out to my sweet blog friends who sent comments and my faithful Entrecard droppers. I'm sorry I'm a little behind in my drops and sending comments back. It's taking me a little extra time to complete these tasks. Hopefully I'll have a little time today to work on it. Gosh, it's has taken me three days to type this post. Uggg! It's early Sunday morning right now and I'm enjoying the silence of the house. It's so nice not to hear my four year old cry in pain. It just breaks my heart. Everyone is sleeping soundly. Ahhhh!!! What a relief.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Hugs

  1. Poor thing!! I know our instincts are to take care of our kids first, but be sure to take care of yourself as well (Yeah, I know - pot calling the kettle black here).

I hope you all feel better soon. (And maybe it is time to look into a new pediatrician?)

  2. Oh no!!! I almost wish I didn't read this. I woke up to my 4 year old coming into my room saying he threw up...has done it twice since then. I'm glad yours is feeling better but I'm probably in for a ride...

  3. So sorry to hear about your daughter. There is nothing worse than a sick child (oh well maybe a sick husband as they tend to whine and moan too!)

  5. oh my goodness, Michelle! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your little one..What a horrible ordeal to have gone through. What a relief that she wasn't dehydrated. I, too, have a Mom who is a nurse, and I am so thankful to get such wonderful advice from her. I have struggled with the doctors in the town that we have moved to, they really REALLY do seem like they don't have a care in the world for the children...And, I too, LOVED my pediatrician as a child...but that was in CT, and he has passed away...Oh, sorry to babble! That was just a heartwrenching post...((hugs)) and take care...

  6. BIG (((HUGS))). What an awful week you've had. Good luck finding a new dr. I agree with you re: doctors not sincerely caring about their patients. It's sad but it seems it's all about the money and how many patients they can squeeze into a day.

  9. I hope your little one gets better, and that no one else gets that awful bug! I hate the stomach bug more than any other virus! The whole house will smell of clorox, lysol and puke. :( Goodluck with finding a new dr. I've been through the same thing, and it's hard to find someone perfect. I would start by asking other parent's who they use.

  11. That's awful!! It's miserable when our kids get so sick, especially like that. When my oldest was 1 year and a half, we both got it from something bad we ate...it was not fun!!
We keep activated charcoal pills (absorb acid and stop vomiting) and acidophiles (replace good bacteria) on hand now...it's come in handy quite a few times now.
I hope this week goes better for you both.

  16. That was an awful experienced you have and L'll say that am glad, too that you took her to emergency room; I would have done the same thing if I were you. My son suffered from stomach flue also last year and I was so worried. Took him to his pediatrician and have done a tests and it came out that he was not dehydrated. Thank goodness!. I agree that you better find a new doctor esp. if they don't really care to you kids health and well being. Glad to hear she is better now! Hope you will be able to have a nice zzzz now :-) Have a great day!

  17. Oh my! Poor little thing! You are calmer than I. I would have been at the ER after 24 hours. I can't believe a virus lasted that long. I've never heard of one lasting for more than 48 hours. Hope you don't get it!

  18. Glad she's on the mend. I know I used to wish it could be me instead of my little ones. Not that I want to be sick.... but you know what I mean.

  27. It's now Tuesday and I sure hope everyone is feeling much better by now. It is so hard to watch our little ones when they are sick and there isn't much we can do about it. Hugs to you too.

  28. We had that stomach bug too. Hailey was sick for almost 7 days with it. She was sooooo sick. Our pediatrician also said it was the worst ever- usually they last 24-48 hours but this one was going on for a long time. I've seen lots of people blogging about their kids being sick with it too. Hope she's all better!
