An End to a Generation

This post is in remembrance of my great aunt Lois. Yesterday I received a phone call from my step mom that my sweet great aunt Lois (on my dad's side) passed away this week at the wise old age of 92. She was the last of her siblings to pass on. I was sad to hear this but glad to know she lived a long full life. I know now she is in a better place and with her brothers and sisters. She was the cutest little old southern lady you ever did see. Of course she always seemed old to me. She wasn't even 5 feet tall, I'm not sure she was even 4 1/2 feet tall. I always felt like I had to get on my knees to give her a hug. I always will remember her smiling and laughing all the time. Her and my other aunt Vernie who has also passed on, lived together in the same house that all their siblings were born in. They lived in this quaint little town called Colletsville. If you were driving through Colletsville and blinked you would surely miss the town. It's been about 11 years since I've been back. The last time I was there was in 1997 when my grandpa passed away. From what I remember next to my Aunts house was the post office. Then a few house over was my grandparents house. Across the street from that was the fire Station. Then down the road was a party store and the school. It was a town were everyone new everybody. It had such old town charm. I have such wonderful childhood memories of visiting every year. My dad would take us every year then once he got remarried him and my step mom would take us. I will always be thankful that they made such a great effort so as we could have a relationship with our family who were so far away. Thanks dad and step mom!! I always remember waking up and laying in bed listening to the sweet sounds of the roosters crowing, the cows mooing, and birds chirping. These sounds always gave me such great peace. Then I would smell the scent of freshly cooked sausage, eggs and pancakes that my sweet grandma would be cooking for us. They always put on such a great spread of food. We then would always go on outings to great places like Grandfather Mountain and Tweetsie Railroad.
I'm sad to know that this is an end to a great generation of people and a chapter in my life that has come to close but I'm so very happy to know that I got to meet these people and be a part of their life's. I will always be grateful to have these memories to hold on too. Rest in peace my sweet aunt.

  1. Oh how sweet! My mom was the last of her family to pass away. I didn't think of it as a generation gone, but you are so right. But that also means I'm now the older generation of the family, I don't know if I like that.

  2. Sorry to hear about your great aunt. Today is my sister Janet's birthday. If she still lived she would be 59. She died at the ripe old age of 45. Much too soon, but while she was here she lived life to the fullest. I truly miss her and am sorry that she didn't get to her grandchildren. Twin boys who are 6 and her namesake who is one. She would have had a ball with those kids! Let me stop before I start crying from missing her.
