Thursday Thirteen - Slang Words From The 50's

The past few Thursday Thirteens I did slang words from different time era's. Since I had a theme started, I decided to keep it going. Hope you enjoy this Thursday Thirteen.

  • Cat - a "hip" person

  • Circled - married

  • Cut the gas - Be quiet!

  • Duck Butt or D.A. - Hairstyle of greasers where hair in back is combed to the middle

  • Fake out - a bad date

  • Fat City - a great thing or place; Happy

  • Greaser - a guy with tons of grease in his hair, which later came to describe an entire group of people. (yes, John Travolta in Grease.)

  • Jacketed - going steady, dating

  • Kookie - nuts, in the nicest possible way

  • Lighter - a crew cut

  • Nosebleed - an insult

  • Paper shaker - cheerleader

  • Pile up Z's - get some sleep

  8. It looks like most of these died along with the 50s. Many of these are new to me... I haven't even heard them in old movies or TV series. I do like "circled" and "paper shaker". By the way, thanks for stopping by my T13.

  24. These are fun! I'm tempted to add a couple to my vocabulary, but I'm sure I'll never remember. Still, it might be entertaining to tell my kids to "cut the gas," particularly if they're arguing. The resulting laughter would stop the argument anyway.

  25. Great list. I love reading stuff like this, but I'm glad teenagers today don't still talk like this. Of course, they have their own slang - just like we did.
