Eye Muscle Surgery And My Toddler

As you'll remember from a previous post, that my little one has been having problems with her eyes. Her eyes seems to cross in all through the day. At first I thought she was just playing around, but the eye crossing became more often through out the day. I became concerned and made her an appointment with an Ophthalmologist . I'm so glad that I did. The visit went very smoothly. My little girl did fantastic with all the visual tests. I was impressed at how well she knows her ABC's now. The doctor eventually put in the drops to dilate her pupils. I was shocked to see both eyes cross in and stay there. The good news is that her sight is 20/20 currently and she doesn't need glasses. The bad news is that her eyes have muscle problems. The doctor referred me to a Pediatric Ophthalmologist and said that my little girl will probably need eye surgery to correct these muscle issues. What? I was shocked. The doctor told me the surgery is out patient and that it's not a big deal. I know from growing up in a family full of doctors and nurses that any type of surgery is a big deal and always carries some type of risk. I guess the doctor was trying to calm me down because I looked upset. Yesterday I was a little frazzled from the news, but today I'm feeling a little better. It's just something that we are going to have to deal with. As a mommy I just hate to see my little one going through all this. The muscle problem needs to be fixed in the next few months. If the problems is ignored it could damage her eye site permanently and I don't want that. We have an appointment in January to meet with the Pediatric Ophthalmologist. I just hate to watch my baby go through any type of pain. It kills me. She has already had surgery when she was one, to remove a dermoid cyst from her eyebrow, that she was born with. The surgeon wanted it out because the cyst would eventually attach to her bone, and they didn't want to have to start removing bone on her eye brow. That was a hard day watching my one year old freak out at the hospital, but we got through it, and we will get through this ordeal. Wish us luck.

  2. Oh! Yes - surgery is always scary! Check out ABC...West (on my blogroll). Her little girl is Maggie's age and already had surgery for her eye. She may need it again too, I think she said.

  3. Aw :( I know how scary that must be.

I haven't blogged about it yet, but my son is going to have surgery on January 13th for a hernia. It is horrifying.

My thoughts are with you and your little girl.

  5. Duffy just said Andrew had this done. It was no big deal but she remembered that he couldn't be anywhere in a smoky area afterwards. She said his happened at the same age.

  7. Wow of course it's scary but what a blessing to discover this now when it's correctable. I'll keep your family in my prayers.

  8. One of my closest friends daughter had this surgery about a year ago. It's been very successful- like you she was quite worried, but they are very please now. My oldest has a "lazy" eye- it doesn't float, but the one eye overcompensated for the other and his vision was perfect in one eye and 20/400 in the other. He's been doing some eye patching and wearing glasses and it's going great! I wish you guys luck!

  11. One of the ladies at my work had the same problem. She did have to have two more surgeries later on, but they were also out patient and she's doing well!

  12. I will send my good thoughts and Karma your direction for this situation... Never a good thing to have to do anything medical with the kids. Very hard on moms and kids alike. I am thinking my daughter is going have some kind of belly button issues to deal with next. I hope not though. We'll see at the next check up in January. :(

  13. Of course you're worried! You're a loving mother. You wouldn't want to be the kind of mom who WASN'T worried! (You must remember, though, I freaked out when my tomcat had his teeth cleaned, so I'm easily excitable.) Still, you have karma and prayers and Christmas spirit and medical technology on your side, so I am positive it will all work out well for you and your wee one.
