In the 80's I was your typical everyday obnoxious teenager . My 20 year high school class reunion is coming up in October, which I plan on attending. It's going to be totally wild seeing all these old faces. The reunion really got me thinking about my younger years and all the off the wall words we use to say. We sure did have our own language going on back then. If you were a teenager in the 80's then you can totally relate to this. What type of words did you say in the 80's. Drop me a line and let me know. Hope you enjoy reading this Thursday 13 as much as I enjoyed writing it.
1. As If!
I'd rather not. "Hey why don't you go out with that guy in the Izod shirt?" "AS IF!"

Something extremely good, and exceptional. "That movie was awesome."

3. Barf Me Out
You might of heard this come from a Valley Girl after you've said something offensive to her. Also used to describe something you do not particularly like.
See Also: Make Me Barf, Gross Me Out, Gross Me Out the Door, Grodie.

9. Dude
Someone who is cool. ie. "Dude!" Origins of this context word can be traced to California. This was my all time favorite word. It took me years to break the habit of saying it.

13. Head Banger
Fan of heavy metal music. Yup, this is what people use to call me back in the day. LOL!

ReplyDeleteI was there. And I used 'em all!
ReplyDeleteThese bring back great memories! I still say "gross me out". :)
ReplyDeleteToo funny and a trip down memory lane :) Happy TT!

Awesome is used to this day, by far too many people. Overused, in fact, to describe things that are not actually awesome, or even more than mildly interesting.
ReplyDeleteI still use awesome. I think that's right up there with cool (slang terms that will never go out of style). Another one that I used a lot back in the 80s was "kick ass". Man, that's a kick ass stereo!
ReplyDeleteHahahaha, what a cool list :) I wonder if people in 30 years wiil laugh as much about todays slang as we do about this.
ReplyDeleteHappy TT and greets
Julia
Like I so still use them?

That was funny. When I was a teen it was "golly geez!" You wrote a great list and it was a nice idea for a TT.
ReplyDeleteMy TT is up here.
I was a 90's teen but I said grodie alot and Bite me A LOT.
ReplyDeleteOne of my sayings was "Pretty Groovy, huh."
I remember telling people to take a chill pill.
ReplyDeleteGreat list! I still say 2,6,8,9 & 10 on a regular basis! Crap! Does that mean I'm showing my age?
ReplyDeleteHappy TT!
I remember a lot of those, haha.

Or My 24th Thursday 13
Don't forget: "Like, Oh My God!" - said in your best Valley Girl accent, of course ;D
ReplyDelete*snork* Too funny. And since my class of '83 reunion is coming up, it was a nice refresher course. Have to say I'm guilty of using a few of these in my time.
ReplyDeleteI guess I never really though about those words as being 80s words...I still use several of them....and Dude is making a comeback...my daughter mentioned the other day that she needs to break the Dude habit (she's 14!)
ReplyDeleteiN THE 70'S I KNOW WE SAID GROSS ME OUT AND HE'S so TUFF(HANDSOME)
ReplyDeleteWe used to say those, too, and still do a lot, lol.
ReplyDeleteWe used to say Chill Out. My mom, trying to be cool, told my brother to "Gel out." one day. He about peed himself laughing at her! LOL
Very funny! I remember these words! Happy TT
ReplyDeleteGreat list, my 20 was the other weekend so I'm right there with ya in being an 80's teen. I was also a head banger and said grodie way too much. Very fun to see those, happy TT!
ReplyDeleteI remember hearing a few of those from my sisters. I was a teenager in the 70s, so I never said any of them.
ReplyDeleteHappy TT!
Thanks for visiting.
ReplyDeleteJust FYI, I linked to your article from 13 Annoying Things On the Web.
What a fun refresher--we heard most of those in our house.
