Blog Etiquette To Live By

I started blogging about a year ago, and Oh what a wonderful year it has been. One of my friends introduced me to the fun world of blogging. She also mentioned that there were a few rules of blogging that everyone needs to follow. The only rule that she really mentioned was to be respectful to other bloggers who comment on you blog. Always comment back. That was the only rule that I knew about. A few days ago I decided to do a little research and find out if there was some type of blogging etiquette that I should be following. Well, there sure is. Gosh, I hope I've been following the rules all these months. I came across many wonderful sites that set me on the right path to proper blogging etiquette. These are not my made up rules, but the rules of the blogging world.

Never ever steal someone else’s words or pictures off their site and post them on your blog. That's considered plagiarism. It’s just plain stealing. It's okay to provide a link to a specific post or even a quote but never copy and paste their words on your site.

It's tacky to include a link to your site when you are commenting on a site. There's a spot on the comment form for your link. There's no need to include it more then once. If you include that in your comment it's considered spam.

Always be respectful to other bloggers. If you disagree with a post, that's okay. But never ever respond to a post you disagree with buying using profanities. That's just plan disrespectful and rude.

Always respond to your readers comments. You love receiving comments, Don't you? Well, so do they. It's just not very polite to not respond back. I've made so many wonderful blogging buddies by responding to their comments. Give it a try. I promise you’ll like it.

Remember once you publish something on the web it's out there for everyone in the world to read. If you don't want people to read something about yourself or a situation, then don't post it. For example if you create a post about your boss at work and you bad mouth that person. How do you know that you're boss isn't reading your words. That could truly jeopardize your job. Plus it's not nice to say mean things about people.

Always respect other blogs. You'd want the same respect in return.

Hope this clears the air about what type of blog etiquette to use as a blogger. I've sure learned a few new things today and I'm going to try my best to follow the rules.

  5. I must admit that I used to add my url at the bottom of my comment. I did not realize it was considered to be inapropriate. Thank you for letting me know.

  6. I think I follow all of the rules. I have used other peoples pictures before, but only to promote their giveaways and I always link them to their blog. I wonder if that is okay.

  7. I do enjoy it when people comment back, but it can be hard if you get on a blog-spree and you forget which ones you poked around on. It is fun having new 'bloggy' friends though! Thanks for the tips us newbies need 'em.

  8. Great post and well said! I always comment back though sometimes I don't respond by email to the comment. I just go their blog and pay them back by posting comments to their blog. I hope that's ok. I guess I should do both all the time?

  15. Yes, agreed! Nothing bothers me more than when people leave anonymous, angry, comments. It's absolutely fine to disagree, but you have to do it respectfully!

Great post. And I love that comic!

  16. Thanks for sharing these guidelines for blogging. I know I'm guilty of leaving a link occasionally to help direct folks to a specific blog because it drives ME nutz when I have to search through multiple blogs for the post I'm seeking. I've also asked permission to share something I've discovered elsewhere, but I always wait for permission and include a link to the original site out of courtesy and to my bloggy friends to one another.
    Hugs and blessings,
