Big Changes Ahead

Seventeen days and counting until the big first day of school. My sweet little girl will be starting kindergarten this year. On top of starting school she will be 5 years old in three weeks. We've got a huge Hello Kitty party planned and she is so excited. Wow, how time flies. It just makes me realize how short life really is. I'm so proud of my little girl. She's has developed into a smart, bright, kind, considerate little girl. I guess the hubby and I must be doing something right.

Last year was really hard on all of us, especially my baby. It started with a bad preschool choice, but we fixed that problem and mid-way in the school year I transferred her to an amazing school. She seems to have forgotten about the bad preschool experience and remembers the fun times at the good preschool. (Mommy sighs) I was really worried that the bad preschool experience would leave scars that would affect her later in her educational journey.

On top of the bad school experience my little on was sick with cold after cold. It seems like I couldn't get ahead of the bugs going around. The doctors keep telling it's normal for a child to get sick a lot once they start school. I hope this year is different, though I have a feeling I'm in for a bad flue season with her. She has already started getting sick again. She's been sick the last two weeks and we have been to the pediatrician's office twice. I've even come down with strep throat the past week. I can't even begin to tell you how sick I've been. I even lost my voice completely for the first time in my life. Just today has it started to come back. My little one is such a trooper. She never complains or cries. She usually just crawls into bed and that's when I know something is wrong. She's usually a very active child.

I'm not a germaphobe and don't usually freak out about colds or bugs going around, but I have to be honest I'm extremely concerned about the H1N1 virus or also know as the swine flue the media keeps talking about. I know the media loves to hype it up, but what if this virus gets out of control? You know how kids pass those flu bugs around. All this flue talk really gets you thinking. I'm not sure if my little one can even have the flu vaccine due to her food allergies. She's allergic to eggs, milk and shellfish. Many vaccines contain eggs. I guess I'll have to talk to her doctor about this.

On top of all the colds and the bad school experience my little gal had eye surgery on both eyes in June. She was so brave before the surgery and never even shed a tear. What an amazingly strong kid. I know, I sound like I'm bragging. But isn't that a mothers job? She came out of the surgery with flying colors and the surgery was a great success. The surgery corrected both her lazy eyes and she was left with full depth perception and fused vision. Yippie! We are so very happy and feel blessed that her eyes are completely corrected.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about this last year. It was just extremely challenging. I'm hoping this coming school year will be a little less stressful on our little girl as well as ourselves.

We've also got all kinds of fun activities planned during the school year. We've just enrolled her in a tap dance class. Which last the entire school year. She will be starting kindergarten soccer next Saturday. That only last for 8 weeks. She played last fall and really enjoyed the game. The hubby is so happy that she wants to play again. I think he enjoyed participating in the game as much as the kids. Plus I want to get her enrolled in catechism or religious education class at our local church. I'm looking forward to watching her at her first holy communion.

She's going to be a busy little girl this school year and so is mommy.

Thanks so much for listen to me ramble on today. I swear blogging is really a great form of therapy. LOL!

  1. You have had quite a year!! Hopefully her little immune system has built up and she won't be sick as much this year. I am pretty paranoid about the swine flu too since my daughter has asthma. Although more people die from the regular flu than the swine flu. If I were you I would just keep an eye on whether or not new people are coming down with it in your community. There is a website where we live that tells how many new cases there are every week and I keep an eye on it. If there seems to be an big outbreak or it's going around at her school- use your mommy instincts to guide you and maybe keep her home. Also- teach her how to wash her hands the right way and if allowed- maybe have her keep hand sanitizer with her to keep her hands clean.

  5. I am sure you have learned from the last year and will do better this year. I try to bleach or use pure white vinegar on something in the house everyday to prevent the germs from building up. Just like the fridge door or all the door knobs or the handles of the kitchen cabinets. You know where they seem to thrive. It has reduced my sickyness a lot.

  7. Wow, what a wonderful little girl you have. It's amazing that she was so brave over her surgery and isn't letting a bad preschool experience even stay in her memory. You've raised her well.
